Mt Meru, Mt Meru Trekking Tours
Mount Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania
at 4,5685m.and the fifth highest in Africa. It is best to allow
three days for climbing Meru since it involves a 3,500m altitude
trek. There are two huts available to climbers on the mountain
and firewood is supplied. The best time to climb Meru is between
October and February. The mountain is usually climbed from Olkokola
on the western side of the crater and you need a park ranger as
an escort due to the threat of buffalo.
Mt Meru Climbing Adventures - 5 Days - BLS 240
Day 1: Nairobi - Arusha
Pickup from from your hotel and proceed to drive south through
the Namanga border post with lunch en route. Transfer to Moivaro
Coffee Lodge (BB) for overnight
Day 2: Momella Gate to Mariakamba
Hut 3,500m
Depart form Moivaro to Momella Gate on the other side of the park
. Walking through the park with armed ranger, game viewing en-route
heading to Mariakamba Hut, about 3,500m above the sea level. Overnight
camping at the hut/campsite
Day 3: Mariakamba Hut to
Little Meru 3,820m
Leaving Mariakamba Hut early in the morning (probably 4:00 am)
winding up to Saddle Hut, approximately 3,500m; Have a break for
lunch and gathering momentum, and then trek to the Little Meru
3,820 m summit. After drinks and photos starts the journey back
to Saddle Hut for overnight the hut/campsite.
Day 4: Saddle Hut to the Summit
4,566m
Early morning (probably 3:00am) climbing towards the summit of
Meru Mountain 4,566m (as an option: walking on the rim of Meru
Crater) this is the place to take Photos of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Back to Saddle Hut for breakfast, lunch and diner as well as overnight
at the hut/campsite
Day 5: Saddle Hut Momella Gate
After stretching and relaxing your painful muscles overnight start
descending after breakfast and reach Momella gate at midday, picked-up
and drive to Arusha town for dinner at Moivaro Lodge.
